Acrylic showers are popular because they look clean and modern without demanding a high-maintenance routine. If you want a shower that stays bright with simple weekly care, acrylic is one of the easiest options to live with. The key is using gentle products and consistent habits, so you keep the finish smooth and avoid dull spots.  In the last blog post, it was mentioned that a mixture of vinegar, water, and Dawn diswhashing detergent will do the trick.  While at home shows and during installations, we’re often asked for the exact recipe for that solution.

The Recipe

The solution is simple:  one cup vinegar, one cup water, and one tablespoon of dishwashing detergent.  Mix it gently to avoid overfoaming, and then place it in a spray bottle to keep next to the shower or in a cabinet close by.

Application

Once a week, spray the entire shower down completely with the solution and wait a couple of minutes.  Then wipe it down gently with a soft cloth.  This should clean most residue easily.  If there are any trouble spots, you can spray again and wipe more vigorously.  Rinsing the surface down after each use can also help–an ounce of prevention is definitely worth a pound of cure.

The mixture will also work well for glass shower doors.  Using a squeegee to wipe off the excess water ater each use will also help.

Even thoughj a weekly cleaning routine helps immensely, life happens.  If you miss a week or two, or you have extremely hard water, or excessive soap scum, you can leave out the water and mix equal parts vinegar and detergent.

One word of caution, if you should have a wood seat, stone bathroom countertops, or hardwood floors, you should avoid using this solution on or around those surfaces.
